What is a cam sensor and can you drive a car with a faulty sensor?
Q. I bought a car off ebay and the seller has now told me a warning light has come on on the dashboard which he has been told is a fault with the cam sensor. I don't know whether to go ahead and still buy the car and whether it could make the 3 hour drive back home. Any advice would be appreciated.

Q. I have a bad cam sensor on my car(autozone checked it out for me) it was driving fine with the engine light on until this am, it started running kinda rough @ certin speeds but returned to normal soon after. How long do I have until I need it replaced or do I need to replace it at all.

A. when the cam sensor finally goes all the way out ,it wont start or run good, that's what helps time the engine,so if it doesn't know where to time it at it wont run good, you need to replace it before it leaves you stranded, good luck.

A. I have a 1996 T-Bird and I am very familiar with every system of that car. There are different steps to replacing the cam sensor depending on whether you have the 3.8L or 4.6L engine. For the 3.8L, do the following: 1) Locate the cam sensor on top of the engine's front cover. To access it you will need to remove the coil pack and the heater pipe coming out of the water pump. 2) Once these items are removed, loosen the two bolts holding the cam sensor to the synchronizer assembly. To make your life A LOT easier and to avoid having to buy and use a cam positioning tool, do not remove the large bolt holding the synchronizer in place. It is absolutely unnecessary when replacing the cam sensor. 3) With the bolts loosened, disconnect the… [cont.]

A. If your serious, you'll go to your local public library and look up your vehicle in the Motors and Chiltons manuals. Ideally you need a professional shop manual from which is expensive. You might also try a one time $10 subscription to an online source as below.

A. If you happen to be driving a 1990 Toyota Supra Turbo with a bad CPS you will: Be able to crank, but not start it. It will die at random. It will die at stops often. When it dies it will crank but not start back up. And you can hit the CPS with a heavy wrench to solve any of these situations temporarily. Thats my experience, will prob be similar with your car, but I couldn't tell you its location on the dodge 2.7. *Physically, what you'll be looking for is probably a larger (wallet sized) flat sensor with two or more screws/bolts holding it down, atleast one will be adjustable so you can slightly twist the sensor one way or another and re-tighten it. Inside it should be just a small gear that is driven off the cam gear or an… [cont.]

A. Does it need a cam sensor or did the timing belt snap? They will set a cam sensor code if belt breaks, and fool people. These sensors are extremely easy to change (on end of cylinder head right above transmission), I wouldn't book it in for this as you could get a 10 year old to do it. And the sensor is probably about $70.

What would cause the cam sensor to show as the check engine light problem after being changed twice?
Q. The timing belt broke on my vw gti and was changed.
Asked by Debra B - Tue May 26 20:20:49 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the Timing Belt broke, then you had it replaced, then the Check Engine light came on with Camshaft Position Sensor faults stored, the problem is the Timing Belt timing, its probably a tooth off. Does the fault say the Cam Position sensor is too advanced or too retarded? If so, thats the problem. Ive also seen people remove the Camshaft sprocket when doing these timing belts and when they reinstall the sprocket, they use the bolt to push the sprocket onto the cam and the woodruff key gets broken off and the timing slips. My professional opinion is the Cam to Crank timing is off a tooth or more. This is a hard engine to time correctly.

A. Which engine is this vehicle equipped with? Is it the 3.0L OHV V6 (eighth digit of VIN 'U'), or is it the 3.0L 24-valve DOHC V6 (eighth digit of VIN 'S')? EIther way, BOTH engines do have CMP sensors. If I were to guess, I would it's the 3.0L OHV V6, since this is the engine that commonly wears out the CMP sensor AND the cam synchronizer. Usually when this happens, the engine runs rough, stalling intermittently. In more extreme cases, a loud squealing type noise (very similar to a belt squeal) is also heard. But to fix this problem requires BOTH to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Where is the Cam Shaft Position Sensor on a 95 Dodge Caravan?
Q. My engine stalls out on my 95 caravan. I believe this is being caused by my Cam Shaft Position sensor shorting out when getting wet. Could anybody tell me where I might find it? Oh, and it's a 3.3L Engine with a Distributorless Iginition System.
Asked by TheFixxxer - Thu Jun 12 12:33:29 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's located just behind the right motor mount that fastens onto the front of the engine. It reads off the cam sprocket. When you change it, the new one should come with a thick piece of paper stuck onto the end if the sensor. This is to Gage between the sensor tip and the spinning cam sprocket. If it doesn't have one, cut one out of a cereal box and stick it on to the sensor tip. Be sure the sensor fits all the way down in the hole as far as it will go. The paper gage will be wiped off when you start the engine leaving a gap between the sensor tip and the sprocket. The gap is not that critical.

A. The cam sensor shouldnt read a voltage, it is only a pickup coil it acts as a trigger when the engine is turning and gives the info to the computer. What do you mean by reader?

A. The sensor should be on the cover near the camshaft. It needs to be able to read the high mark on the camshaft. Good luck! removal & installation except 4.6L Engines caution prior to removing the camshaft position sensor, set the No. 1 cylinder to 26 after top dead center of the compression stroke. Note the position of the sensor electrical connection. When installing the sensor, the connection must be in the exact position on installation. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the ignition coil, radio capacitor and ignition coil bracket. 3. Remove the camshaft position sensor retaining screw and sensor. 4. Remove the retaining bolt and hold-down clamp. 5. A. The sam sensor itself is not hard to replace. It is located on the front of the engine by the pulley, just below the water pump. Look for a 3 wire connector in the area. However, this may not be your problem. There is a small magnet that is attached to the back side of the cam gear. This magnet is known for falling off and causing a cam code. This is very expensive to replace as you need to remove the waterpump, crank pulley, timing cover, and timing chain and gears to fix this problem. These engines do not need the cam sensor to run. The check engine light will stay on, and it might just take a few second more to start when the temp os cold out.
