A. Camshaft position sensor,,signal to tell the computer to make minute adjustment on the emission system,,,and save you gas you can hardly notice it not working,as long it is not shorted or grounded common problem is the small magnet inside falls off,,if the magnet didn't smash the moving parts inside,,you will only replace the sensor, which is cheap, part and labor wise,,,otherwise you ll have to replace, the whole assembly which is time consuming, and part is more expensive

Q. I have a 1994 Ford Windstar 3.8L GL. I need to replace the camshaft position sensor, but I can't find it anywhere. I have tried searching online as well as using a repair manual.

A. On top of the engine timing cover. But to repair whatever issue you are having, most likely requires that you replace the cam sensor AND synchronizer assembly. This part requires EXACT proper orientation upon installation of the new part, failing which will result in driveability issues and hard starting. Hope this helps.

What effect does a camshaft position sensor have?
Q. I have an 01 F250. Error codes tell me that the MAF and the Purge Cannister is bad. I have replaced both. Still trouble starting, and rough erratic idling, with backfires. Could the problem actually be the Camshaft Sensor? Thanks PO102 MAF sensor circuit low input PO443 Evaporative emission control system, purge control valve circuit malfunction
Asked by Goduece - Tue May 19 10:43:22 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The error codes do not tell you what to replace, only what circuits are having problems. Seldom does the MAF sensor ever fail. If it did, you could disconnect it and if it then starts, you can assume that it is NG. If you replaced both parts and still have the same trouble codes, you need to get a factory manual and follow the pinpoint test for each DTC. Are you getting a CMP sensor DTC? If it isn't broken, don't mess with it! You should have listed the codes that you got also, I never did like diagnosing in the dark>

A. Its on the front of the left cylinder head in plain sight. You don't have to remove anything to get to it. It's held in by a 10mm head bolt and has a black 3 wire connector. The wire colors are orange, black/light blue, and tan/yellow. Hope this helps. P.S. The 2.7L was never equipped with a distributor.

Camshaft Position Sensor or is it some other problem i have ?
Q. I have a 1999 Buick Century, 95000 miles Autozone already did a reading and told me its the camshaft sensor. But my symptoms dont relate to the camshaft The service engine light has been stuck on for almost 2 years. The car keeps jerking really bad there is ticking in the engine all the time Engine was already completely redone 1 year ago
Asked by Buff Me - Tue Apr 15 21:46:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Autozone can just "read your codes". However, you may be looking at a power control module (pcm, the vehicle's "computer"), where the signal from the camshaft position sensor goes. You must get a complete engine diagnosis to determine whether it is indeed your camshaft positioning sensor or your pcm.

Where is the Camshaft Position Sensor located on the 97 Chevy Malibu LS?
Q. I was told that this part may be bad on my car. The valves just started ticking adn then my car died. It started back up fine but my idle is not regular, the valves are still ticking, there is no Engine light on, and yes there is oil in my car. I ask the guy at the parts store he suggested the Camshaft Position Sensor. What do you think?
Asked by Poole - Wed Jan 10 23:33:02 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, if the cam sensor was acting up, there would be a "check engine light" right away. With excessive lifter noise, the only sensor that would pick that up is the knock sensor. I would suggest having your engine flushed (adding cleaners to your old oil and run it 1500 rpms with no load for a while, my best secret is to use Dextron III ATF fluid) and change the oil with something half decedent. If that does not free up the lifters, your looking at some money to replace them.

Camshaft position sensor in a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer?
Q. My check engine light came on today in my truck which has 103K miles. I took it to auto zone and they said the camshaft position sensor is what was causing the light to come on. They said it's probably throwing off the timing of the truck and when I replace the sensor I'll have to have the timing redone. What does that mean. Is it expensive. Would it be better to just trade the car in and not waste the money on a truck with over 100K miles that has a few other corky problems---lock cylinder broken, heat/air only works when set to blow at 3 or higher, front left tire making horrible noise when reversing and accelerating. Other than the light there are no other indications that something might be wrong with the engine. No rough idling,… [cont.]

A. A cam position sensor is for the variocam system (it senses and adjusts the valve opening and closing on the cylender head with the ignition firing timing for optimum horsepower), so it would be just a sensor that has little to do with keeping the timing on the car straight. Those days of timing the car are gone with the new pointless and distribtorless engines. You will Not need to get the car re timed, the engine will take care of that on its own once the mechanic resets the engine with his computer. Most likely it is the O2 sensor but who knows the autozone guys maybe right about the cam sensor after all. The cam sensor shouldbe around $60, an O2 sensor should be $110, plus labor. Good luck. The car, 2002 blazer should run well to… [cont.]

Difference between crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor?
Q. I know, I know, one of them tells the ECU where the crankshaft is and the other the camshaft. But my question is, what is the point of having both? I know the crankshaft one helps determine things like the spark timing. What does the camshaft one do that the crankshaft one doesn't do? What is the point of having both?
Asked by Robert - Thu Jun 11 12:11:44 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The camshaft turns at only half the speed of the crankshaft so you cannot assume the cam position by the crank position. While it would be possible to assume the crank position if you know the cam position, if there were any play in the chain or belt that drove the cam, this would introduce an error in the crank position which would be much more critical than the cam position since the spark timing is driven from the crank position and must be accurate to within a degree or two.

A. Camshaft position sensor should give you a problem light on your dash & a computer fault. and engine fuel system will not function, car will not run. Crankshaft position sensor disconnected, engine will not start or run reconnect it! or if it is damaged replace it. dont move the thing around it will mess up the fuel system timing. Yours: Grumpy

A. It is a sensor that went bad, i think it stops your car from starting. The part is very easy to change, all you need is a screw-driver and a new camshaft position sensor. It is located at the Passenger side of the car, around the belts. The part is about $150, and it is the size of an key chain.

A. Usually they're under the valve cover, toward the end with the timing belt. Why, did yours take a dump? Grab a Haynes manual from Autozone, it'll show you step-by-step (with pictures!) how to replace it, and I guarantee you won't need any special tools except maybe a torque wrench. Even if you have to buy yourself a socket set, Haynes manual, torque wrench, and the new sensor, it'll cost less than a quarter of taking it to a garage to get fixed. And it'll only take you an hour or so to fix it.
