How do I install the crankshaft position sensor?
Q. I have found out recently through diagnostics that I need to replace the crankshaft position sensor. Has anyone done this before? I don't think I can get to it from the hood. Do I have to get underneath the car? If it helps, I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have a Chilton, but it doesn't tell me if I have to remove other things to get to it.

A. you have to remove the front crank pully...then remove the sensor...there is a special tool you use to line the sensor up properly...you can probably rent the tool from your auto parts store...it's not that big of a job...just takes a little time ...I suggest you get a manual such as chiltons to help guide you through the process...or have a mechanic do it. Hope this helps

A. looking at the engine from the front of the car the ckp is on the right side,in the rear. it is really diffucult to see. take off the plastic panel on top of the engine and u can see it thu the intake looking down. its held in by a 10mm bolt. the connector is green and you have to push the green part into the connector for it to release.

Can someone please describe the location of the crankshaft position sensor on a 2003 Nissan Altima?
Q. I purchased the sensor after the OBD II equipment stated that there was a problem with it, and replaced a sensor that is exactly the same on the drivers side. I have a feeling that I got the camshaft sensor and not the one with the problem, therefore I need to know where the crankshaft sensor is so I can replace the right one. Dealership confirmed that the part number for both is the same but could not give me a diagram or help on the location... Thanks in advance! 2.5L engine Thanks to everyone that replied... I found and replaced the sensor. o Confirmed that camshaft & crankshaft position sensors are the same. o Crankshaft position sensor is a lot more difficult to replace as it is hidden under the engine and very difficult to access… [cont.]

A. Well aftermarket parts can and do sometimes look so what different , also even some new factory part replacements can look etc a bit different it all depends on who , where and what materials were used , plus it depend on if any engineer updates or changes in the design have occurred too. Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if worried call around find out what other part suppliers offer you as a replacement that are made by the same manufacture for your vehicle and double check part numbers etc.

Difference between crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor?
Q. I know, I know, one of them tells the ECU where the crankshaft is and the other the camshaft. But my question is, what is the point of having both? I know the crankshaft one helps determine things like the spark timing. What does the camshaft one do that the crankshaft one doesn't do? What is the point of having both?
Asked by Robert - Thu Jun 11 12:11:44 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The camshaft turns at only half the speed of the crankshaft so you cannot assume the cam position by the crank position. While it would be possible to assume the crank position if you know the cam position, if there were any play in the chain or belt that drove the cam, this would introduce an error in the crank position which would be much more critical than the cam position since the spark timing is driven from the crank position and must be accurate to within a degree or two.

Most of the time you don't even have to pull the harmonic balancer off I say buy your self a $20 book and see how easy it is to replace...It's not hard ...just about one of the easiest sensors to replace on that design
