Drinking water or potable water is water of sufficiently high quality that it can be consumed or used without risk of immediate or long term harm. In most developed countries, the water supplied to households, commerce and industry is all of drinking water standard, even though only a very small proportion is actually consumed or used in food preparation.

Over large parts of the world, humans have inadequate access to potable water and use sources contaminated with disease vectors, pathogens or unacceptable levels of dissolved chemicals or suspended solids. Such water is not potable and drinking or using such water in food preparation leads to widespread acute and chronic illnesses and is a major cause of death in many countries. Reduction of waterborne diseases is a major public health goal in developing countries.

Typically, water supply networks deliver potable water, whether it is to be used for drinking, washing or landscape irrigation. One counterexample is urban China, where drinking water can optionally be delivered by a separate tap.

How to remove chlorine from drinking water ?
Q. The drinking water is very heavily chlorinated in my city. I tried brita and a few other pitcher type filters. They remove some chlorine, but not all. Do you know any device (for less than $500.00 ) to remove chlorine from drinking water?

A. You can place it in an open large mouthed container and let it evaporate out or try a PUR filter. If you want to get it all out, you'll need a reverse osmosis system and they may run more than 500.

How can I get safe drinking water?
Q. Bottled water is getting expensive, especially if one drinks a few bottles a day. So is there a way to get safe clean drinking water for a cheaper price and/or possibly free?

A. Most Health Food stores now have large systems in-store that filter the water and use reverse osmosis. If you take your own gallon jugs in it's 39 cents a gallon. I've also seen these machines at Kroger and Meijer. The Meijer brand name Spring water is Absopure under their lable, and is often on sale at 3 cases for $10 which is quite reasonable. There are two of us and we drink 2-3 per day. We also have filters on the kitchen sink and the shower head. US tap water is polluted with fluoride and chlorine, two very dangerous and toxic chemicals. That being the case it's very important that you continue to drink clean, pure water. If you do choose to go the 'counter-top' filtered route make sure it's one that rids the water of both… [cont.]

How can I tell if Im drinking enough water 2 lose weight?
Q. How can I tell if Im drinking enough water 2 lose weight? As opposed to just drinking water that would be stored as pounds in my body. I weigh about 190 and I drink around 96oz of water a day about 30 minutes before I eat lunch, breakfast, and dinner in hopes that it will fill me up. I have been doing this for a week and I weighed myself today and I weigh almost 10lbs more. I am scared that Im just going to keep getting fatter and that all the water is not moving through my system but being stored. I pee constantly but I only had one large bowel movement this week. I don't eat alot of salt or salty food. Help! Am I doing something wrong?

A. The water isn't going to get stored any more than usual. Your weight fluctuates. Don't cut back on water! You need it to flush everything out. Just keep on, add more exercise, you'll see some movement. And add more fiber to your diet! One bowel movement a week isn't a lot. Eat more greens, or take a fiber tablet if you can't get enough with your diet.
