How much is a new head gasket with installation on a 95 Mustang?
Q. I am considering buying a 95 Mustang for my first car and the only thing it needs is a head gasket. The car is already priced way below KBB at $800 so how much would a head gasket installed be? Also is this a good deal even though the car is not inspected? And can a car run a little bit without a head gasket?
Asked by jrryadigg - Sun May 17 10:38:22 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi: Short answer. DO not buy this car. If the head gasket is shot the main bearings may also be washed out from having coolant in the engine. You could spend from $500 bucks to $1500 depending on wether you need to have the heads or block machined etc as they may have been warped by the engine overheating when the gasket let go, then have to rebuild the entire motor a month later when the bearings come to a screeching halt. Either get a new/ used motor and replace the entire thing or stay away from the car altogether. And No, a car can not run without a head gasket. After about 10 miles the motor will seize up. russ

When replacing a head gasket would a mechanic ever re-use the exhaust gaskets?
Q. I had my head gasket replaced on my 2001 Subaru Forester about 2 months ago, and just had to go back yesterday to find out that my exhaust gaskets were leaking. Wouldn't that be part of any gasket kit? And would a mechanic ever re-use old gaskets when doing such a big job?
Asked by Roselyn - Fri Mar 26 14:19:19 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The exhaust gaskets on your engine are quite high quality and can usually be reused (except in the states where salt is used on the roads in winter) with no leaks. They are not automatically included in any Subaru factory head gasket "kit". The fact that they apparently were not leaking initially when you first got the car back suggests improper tightening of the nuts securing the exhaust system. To replace the gaskets should take about 20 minutes and no more leaks.

How to check for a blown head gasket in a 1994 Honda Civic?
Q. My 1994 Honda Civic is overheating and I need to check for a blown head gasket. How do i do this? There is no water in the oil. We have replaced the thermostat and the timing belt recently.

A. Fill the cooling system with clean water and start the engine with the cap off.Leave it ticking over and observe the filler neck.If you see large air bubbles in the water then it a tell tail sign that compression is entering the cooling system? If the gasket is blown, then eventually the engine will start to throw the water out of the filler neck big time.Hope this helps

How much would a mechanic cost for a blown head gasket?
Q. How much would the mechanic cost for a blown head gasket. The car is a porsche 944 the year 1985. The head gasket kit is $200 and I was wondering how much a non-dealership mechanic would charge? If there is anything else I need to need, please tell me. Thx for any advice or suggestions in advance. This is whats wrong with the car I was looking forward to buy. The car is $2500 plus the repairs.
Asked by DT - Sun Apr 13 23:29:52 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. it could be very expensive. if it needs a new head gasket you also need to have the head itself checked. that could cost you a ton if theres something wrong. also being porsche there may be some specialty tools required and a "regular" mechanic may not have them. if the head is ok your still looking at a few hundred or more in labor easy and atleast 100 to have the head just checkd out. who knows what it costs to fix or buy a head.

A. This is a very difficult job on this car, especially if its turbo. If you have not changed head gaskets before, you won't want this one to be your first. If the car ran with water in the oil the crankshaft will be damaged too. Consider getting another used engine. If you do take the heads off, you'll get a "top end gasket kit" should have everything you need and then some. Get a service manual or all-data account. Read it. Take the heads to check for flatness and pressure checked at a machine shop.

What does the head gasket have to do with the engine?
Q. I think I blew my engine on my 92 Mazda Protege, but it needed a head gasket when i bought it. Do you think their is a relationship?
Asked by loveablebaby0101 - Sat Dec 1 17:15:42 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The headgasket sits between the head and the cylinder block to keep combustion pressure from leaking out. Its a fairly important part of the engine. Common signs of headgasket failure: coolant in the oil oil in the coolant white smoke out the exhaust erratic overheating coolant leaking onto the block and spark plugs that look 'steam cleaned'

How much oil will a blown head gasket consume in 1000 miles?
Q. I have a blown head gasket (or so they say) and two quarts of oil were missing after 1000 miles. Does this make sense? There is no noticeable burnt oil in the exhaust, the pan and valve cover were sealed three weeks ago. Where did the oil go?

A. Check your cooling system... Unlikely, but the only place it would go if the two issues are in fact related.

If you suspect your head gasket is leaking oil, will taking the head off confirm it?
Q. If I take off the valve cover and then take off exhaust, intake & head, will I be able to tell by looking at the old gasket whether or not it was the head gaskets fault?
Asked by peter b - Wed Apr 16 22:31:33 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's not. Maybe your valve cover gasket, or valve guide seals. Spray it down with carb cleaner, then watch where it comes from. If not, see if any plugs are oiley, that'll be valve guide seals.

A. more tham $1,000 to fix a head gasket, look at your oil in the engine and if it looks milky colored and if you have been losing antifreeze and wondering where it's going you have a bad head gasket or intake gasket.

A. i own a repair shop and there's several things that can cause it ,one is over heating it ,or running it low on coolant which will make it over heat, and another is running it real hard, and some vehicles like yours have a reputation of blowing head gaskets, and the vibe is one of them, also if the coolant fan doesn't come on it will do this ,there's lot of reasons, but the vibes did a have a reputation of blowing head gaskets, and the cost to repair this one and do it right is about 800 bucks ,because they have to have the head trued back up or it wont hold up very long until it blows another one, they may charge a little more also depending on the amount of damage caused by this one blowing, good luck with it i hope this helps.

How does a blown head gasket work?
Q. I am currently looking into getting this small little subaru with a blown head gasket. It is a 1985 GL Sedan. And I would like to know what exactly the head gasket does. Does the car still run with it blown? About how much does it cost to fix it? Even after its fixed, will it effect other parts of the car? Please help.
Asked by darkmoonwolf1818 - Sat Jul 25 04:16:25 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The head gasket is placed between the block and the head. This is used to allow the head to be separated from the block for repair. There are many channels and ports that run from the block to the head. Oil, coolant, and combustion. Keeps these 3 elements where they belong. The car can continue to run with it blown. This is not cheap to repair. Need to have the head surfaced and if it is to thin to shave, warped, or cracked it will have to be replaced. While it is off the car need to have valves redone. Total cost in a shop probably 800 to 2000 depending on the shop, condition and repair needed. Yes it could effect the car and still have problems after repair. It is very important to know how long it has been this way and if it still runs.… [cont.]

A. my buddy paid $1200 to have a head gasket done at a shop (and that was several years ago). repair manual=$20 top end gasket set= around $75 that warm fuzzy feeling you get knowing you did it yourself and saved a bunch of money=priceless like the guy above said, find a buddy who knows what they are doing and give them 200-300 and save yourself some money. head bolt torque adj??? you use a torque wrench in 3 steps to around 85lb. its a proceedure, not part you need= head gasket, maybe exhaust gasket, maybe intake gasket, maybe valve cover gasket . i don't think a shop will discount for parts brought in.

A. Just to replace the head gasket, change the oil and filter and refill with coolant should be between $525.00 and $700.00 depending on where you take it. If you do it yourself, you can do it for around $200.00 or so. I would suggest getting the head reworked while it's off though. This could run another $250.00 or so. Hope this helps and good luck

After adhesion, is it ok to go ahead and torque the head to spec or will that squeeze out all the adhesive/sealant? Asked by omnisource - Sat Oct 6 00:01:15 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I dont think I would use a sealant at all. the head has high heat. Your gasket should have copper or some kind of metal in the gasket that goes around each cylinder. sealant at that temp will fail.
