manual transmission?
Q. in manual, when you come to a complete stop you hold the brakes and clutch right why do sometimes you see the car roll back and how to do it sometimes you see the backlight is not on
Asked by jenny S - Sun Jun 8 18:26:53 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you have the clutch depressed, it is separating power from the engine to the transmission. If the brake is not applied, the vehicle may roll. The "reverse" light should not come on unless the transmission is shifted into reverse.

What is a good first manual transmission car?
Q. I'm looking for a good first car that is manual transmission. I've never driven a manual before and I've heard that some car's manual (kia forte koup's) transmissions can be a bit dodgy. Any suggestions on a good manual transmission car that isn't too steep in the wallet?

A. It should be 4-door, 4-cyls, not sporty. I would prefer Honda or Toyota... First time drivers usually have much more expensive car insurance, and it depends from car. You should compare insurance rates while choosing the car - for example here - carquotes.fateback.com

A. On some trucks you can do this depending on which trans it is. You will have to remove the tailsection (this is where the transfer case will bolt up) If it does not have a removable tailsection (6-8 in. long) it cannot be done.

Can you start a manual transmission car without a battery, and without a starter?
Q. Again, there is no battery and there is no starter. The engine and everything else works fine. Manual transmission - if we push and pop the clutch, will the vehicle start?
Asked by charlesm4450 - Wed Aug 12 13:45:16 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The way most alternators are constructed, they need the battery to produce a magnetic field in the alternator. I don't know of any permanent magnet alternators. Alternators have a field winding and a stator winding. Without the battery to put a current into the field winding, the alternator won't produce any electricity. It needs the battery to "jump start" the alternator.

Will teaching others to drive a manual transmission on my new car cause any significant damage?
Q. I just got a new Honda Fit and was planning on teaching my 2 brothers how to drive with the manual transmission this weekend. I expect a lot of bumpy starts and plenty of stalls. My question is how much will this really damage the transmission? Thanks!
Asked by Clark Wolfe - Wed May 20 11:12:01 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It probably won't damage the transmission unless they over-rev the engine in the wrong gears, but they may be damaging the clutch if they're constantly riding the clutch. Hondas have very light clutches so it shouldn't be very hard to teach your brothers how to drive on your car. Good luck with the lessons! I want a Honda Fit myself!

What transmission is better for a Jeep Wrangler, Automatic or Manual?
Q. I see hardcore offroad Jeeps (big lift, big tires, etc.) that have automatin transmissions, but all I here from my friends is that a manual transmission is way better. Can someone please help me or give me some insight on the pros and cons of these two transmissions for the Jeep Wrangler.

A. I have a 1989 Wrangler with an auto and a 2001 with a manual,I like the auto when 4wheelin.When 4wheelin with an auto you can focus more on the road and you don't lose any momentum when shifting.I like the manual for driving around town,I know that this is different from most other people so I guess it is just a personal choice.

Is it possible to convert a car with automatic transmission to manual transmission?
Q. Is it possible and is it worth the money? My dad is soon going to give me his Honda civic with automatic transmission. I would prefer to drive a car with manual transmission. So I was just curious to see if this is possible. Thanks.

A. Given enough time and money anything is possible. Yes you can do it but you'd be better off just selling the car and getting one with a manual transmission. Cars that have been converted over usually are never as good as one's bought that way.

How does a keyless start system work with a manual transmission?
Q. Manual transmissions must have the clutch depressed in order to start correct? So how would the start be achieved by a keyless/automatic start system. Also, if this is not the problem, is the car owner responsible to leave the transmission in neutral as to prevent the car from driving away upon an automatic start? Please explain... So if you didn't leave the vehicle in neutral it WOULD actually engage and drive away??
Asked by metalhorse8 - Sun Jun 14 18:59:31 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. there are several different ways to bypass the clutch safety system NONE of which I recommend. depending on the brand of system, some starters require a set of switches mounted near the gear shift lever telling the remote start brain that the vehicle is in neutral, and then the starter wire from the alarm brain is run to the vehicle starter side of the neutral safety switch. this very unsafe, as a malfunction from one of these switches would allow the vehicle to start in gear, causing it to roll forward or back, depending on the gear left in. there are now systems that require a series of steps be taken which tells the alarm brain that the vehicle is out of gear.. in this order 1.set emergency brake. 2. place car in neutral. 3. remove key… [cont.]

A. Under the truck, on the side of the transmission there is a filler plug. The oil level is determined by removing this plug and filling until oil comes out of the hole. Same with the differentials.

A. There are normally many things that you will need to change. The computer, and all related electrical equipment. The clutch slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder, and the 3 pedal set up. Most autos have bigger brake pedals since there's more room. You will probably need to change the drive shaft and other related pieces as well.
