How much does it cost to replace an oil pressure switch on a 2003 Buick Century?
Q. Had an oil leak so I took it to the mechanic and he said it was the oil pressure switch and he would do it for about $75-$100 for parts and labor. I looked up the part at Autozone and it is only $10. Should I do it myself? Is he overcharging me? I head it is easy to do.

A. The switch is on the front of the motor right above the starter. The book only calls for a half an hour of labor, and GM lists the part at only $20 (cheap!). So say even if he was buying official GM parts and charging $100/hr for labor, you're still only at $70. I'd personally get on my back and grab that thing with a pair of pliers and turn it out of there. Just make sure to wrap the threads on the new one with some teflon tape or some pipe dope, otherwise the leak might even be worse.

Can too much oil blow an oil pressure switch?
Q. I have a 2004 Dodge intrepid, 92,000 miles. It had an oil leak, took it to the shop and 3 times in 6 weeks they have replaced the oil pressure switch. They say they top off the oil, and when the car is at rest having not been run for a couple of hours the oil on the dipstick measures over the max line. And could it be the pump. Obviously I know it is not going to be determined without being able to see it but was just wondering about any suggestions. I am basically broke and can not afford to continue taking it to the shop every 2 weeks.
Asked by Rachi - Tue Sep 25 10:05:08 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. NO, the oil pressure switch has no idea how much oil is in the engine, it only responds to oil pressure after the oil has been pressurized by the oil pump. A reputable shop should stand behind their repair, you should not be paying for a new oil pressure switch every two weeks. There is clearly something else going on. Maybe too much oil pressure but not likely. The leak could be from another source and may be dripping down onto the oil pressure switch.

There is oil leaking from the oil pressure switch?
Q. 1990 camaro rs v8. i have an oil pressure switch on the side of my engine and the wire that plugs into it kept falling out when ever i drove somewhere, upon further inspection i noticed that when the car is on oil will steadily drip out of the plug. Why is this, and do i have to get a new plug, if so how much are they, and how do i replace it, would i need to drain the oil first?
Asked by nick - Thu Sep 27 11:59:15 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Depending on where you live, that sensor aka pressure sensor/switch is 27$ @ a discount parts store such as Pepboys Autozone or advanced. You will probably want to change the connector too. A hole box in different sizes is about 2.50$. If you don t have a real Amphenol crimping tool (35$-200$) just solder the connector on to the wire Pressure sensors leaking is very common and it is no big deal and way cheaper to change than adding oil or spinning the bearings.

timer delay circuit for a 12v oil pressure switch?
Q. I need to wire in an oil pressure switch into a car's oil system so that if a fault develops it will cut the power to the coil and stop the engine. However to start the engine i will have to override the switch for say 15 seconds to allow the engine to start, once started the oil pressure will rise and the pressure switch will take over and automaticly cut the power stopping the engine. Anyone know how to build such a circuit?

A. This is an interesting idea for a project, and I have some suggestions for you. But you may want to reconsider stopping your engine if it develops a serious fault. if you are in the passing lane in deadly traffic, you may prefer to damage your engine over getting mashed in an accident, and if the engines automatically shuts down, you may not have a choice. A loud alarm buzzer might be a better choice! So, first, from J.S. s response 8 months ago! An easy project to build, and a site that describes the 55 microchip. Then there are other sites, among them, other projects, that might be useful: and finally, therre is 'the easier way': buying a project kit and building it. If you have not done anything like this before,… [cont.]

Where is the oil pressure SWITCH (not sender) on a 1985 Fiero V-6?
Q. Where is the oil pressure SWITCH (not sender) on a 1985 Fiero V-6? My Fiero keeps blowing the 10A fuel pump fuse and my research has shown that the oil pressure switch on these cars acts as a backup for the the fuel pump relay. I have already replaced the fuel pump and filter. Additionally I have searched for any loose electrical ground / frayed wiring. Pretty sure it is the oil pressure switch which is a $5-10 part.
Asked by HUZZ69 - Sun Jun 14 05:00:08 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The pressure switch is mounted on or very near to the oil filter casting of the engine. The power wire to the switch is orange/black. That is also the color of the power wire to the fuel pump relay. The power wire leaving the switch is tan/white and goes to the pump.

A. It could be leaking. Or it could be shorted internally. Or it could be sludged internally. Or the wires that go to it could be shorted. All of these will send various erratic signals to the guage.

Where is the oil sending unit or oil pressure switch at on my fuel injected 351w?
Q. its a 1989 model motor. its leaking oil down the back of the motor what could it be?
Asked by Wyatt S - Wed Mar 25 07:47:02 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. That sending unit should be by the oil filter. This would be on the drivers side near the front, just above the oil pan to block surface, It sounds like your intake manifold to block gasket is leaking. each end of the intake is sealed to the block with a cork or rubber gasket. Common leak in the 351W series.

A. Take off the dog house and look right there behind the distributor. take it out and put plumbers tape on the threads then install it. Then install the wire and put the dog house back in. btw you will need a decent size regular screw driver to get the bolts that hold the dog house into place. Then you should have 2 clips that are quite visible.

A. Mostly on older cars you had an oil pressure switch, that when the oil pressure was to low the switch activated a light on the dash board to let you know there was a problem. A bad oil pressure switch (by itself) will most likley never cause a vehicle to run bad or not run at all. But, you will not have any warning of a problem that would cause your engine to die a slow painful death. Most newer vehicles have an oil pressure sending unit(not switch) that relays information to the vehicles computer and to the gauges, or check engine light on the dashboard. If the sending unit fails you will get a low oil pressure reading or check engine light and the cars computer might shut the motor down in an attempt to save itself. So to recap, an oil… [cont.]

A. A switch would only be used if you have a warning light. If you have a gauge, it would use a sensor. All I can find is for a sensor, which goes through the PCM before the signal is fed to the dash. Of 2 engines available for your vehicle, it only shows one picture of the location for this sensor. #2 in this picture;
